A few of my favorite "Being a Mom" photos...

This is what I'm celebrating today. :-)

Not only am I celebrating these blessings, but I am also lucky enough to have a few "bonus" kids that may have been to big for me to carry by the time they came into my life, but I carry them in my heart.

Happy Mother's Day to everybody who is somebody's Mom, or is a child who blessed the life of a Mom, like all of mine have blessed me!

Old School Pirate Band

Last night was the debut of the Pirate Band's 2010 marching show. It made me realize that I have been a band parent for a long, LONG time!!! :) Let's see... Jimmy graduated in 1997, so 4 years of high school and 2 years of middle school band... WOW It's been since fall of 1991! Almost 20 years of non-stop percussion. And you all wonder why I am crazy??? :-)

I am very proud of all my band kids, but today I'm putting the spotlight on Jimmy. This is a video from when he was in Jr. High in 1993... specifically what is now Capps Middle School. (Cooper had not been built yet.) He is the slightly nervous musician playing keyboard.

And this is the Pirate Marching Band 1996-97 Jim is the tall guy on the snare line.

Lazy after Vacation

I am most definitely not feeling creative right now, but I know my readers are clamoring for a new post. (lol) So I am allowing my oldest son to be my guest blogger for today. I have mentioned him in many posts, but here is your opportunity to really get to know him, as this is his introduction in his own words.

So... take it away Jimmy!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My name is James, Jim, Jimmy, Jerk (that’s what Bear calls me), Dog Breath or Motor Mouth (that’s what Andy called me) Bentley, Buttley, and Bent as well a variety of other names, usually involving the letters J or B.
Or some choice four letter words. I’ll leave you to your own conclusions.
I live in South Portland, Maine and am currently freezing my butt off here in the great arctic north. I hope the summer is as good as I hear it is – otherwise I want my money back.
I work as a systems administrator (read here Computer Whipping Boy) for a company called Hannaford Brothers Grocery. They own part of Food Lion, the food store that was slapped with proven allegations of selling old and tainted meat sometime back in the nineties.
Which reminds me - I have to hurry up writing this; I must get back to fixing the computers that are programmed to wrap the tainted meat for sale. But I have time to mention a few more things.
I play the piano and fool around (while trying to look cool) on the guitar. Maybe one day I’ll be good. Mom says I will be, but she also once told me that I would be an astronaut. That’s just not a reliable source, you know?
I’m thirty-one years old, probably a few (okay, like twenty) pounds overweight and I have an unhealthy, inexplicable desire to eat my weight in McDonald's food. One day, maybe I’ll do that and be good at the guitar. To dream the impossible dream.
My desires to become a writer or a politician (or both) have about the same chance of Mom winning the lottery, but I hope these goals will come along with the guitar and McDonalds achievements I have listed above.
I’m married to a lady from Maine, and she’s very nice to me. She generally doesn’t call me stupid (unless I have done something stupid) and she is very forgiving of my tendency to talk too much. Unlike her father, who once said, “Can’t you shut that guy up, Tiffanie? Every time he opens his mouth, his guts fall out.” (True story)
That’s okay though, I know he really likes me deep down.
I have to be up for work at noon, and it is now 3:45 AM. So I bid you all adieu and grant you permission you to get on with your lives. Good night ladies and gentlemen – may your lives be complete and prosperous. And may you suffer from little to no lower back pain.
Jimmy
Photos from Jimmy and Andy's Brief Visit
Jimmy and one grand-twin have come and gone, and now I'm sad. Maine is simply too far away! But it's too cold most of the year to tempt me to move there, at least for now. :)
Tiffanie couldn't make the trip because of work restraints, so my other little angel Stevie didn't come either. Although I know there will be other visits, I feel like my Grandma cup was only half full this time. Sigh.
I know it was a pretty big job for Jimmy to fly with just the one, and I was glad to at least have Andy Baby. So now I'll share some snapshots from their visit. (Sorry Jim, for some reason we took more pictures of that cute baby than of you! Har har.) To tell the truth, Little Andy Pandy looks just like Jimmy when he was small.
Grandma and her little man.
Grandpa and baby enjoyed watching "Dancing with the Stars."
This Grandma stuff is a real treat!
Smile and say Cheese!!
I guess it's a good thing my grandkids don't visit as often as I would like, or else this whole blog would be all baby pictures. :)
A Happy Birthday, and a graduation!
Today, which happens to be my birthday, Shelby graduates from high school! I am writing this post in advance, because the day is going to be completely hectic with a pre and post graduation open house, not to mention the lengthy ceremony.
Twelve years ago almost to the day, I attended my firstborn's graduation. I'll never forget that one! That was an amazing day, seeing my first child making the transition into the adult world. Jim's graduation was not without a bit of drama, however. His counselor was not sure he had enough credits to graduate, and we didn't find out until the day of the ceremony that he actually did! That made Jimmy's graduation a bit more exciting than average!
Since I won't have photos or film of Shelby's graduation ready for a few days, I am offering a brief clip from Jimmy's graduation as this week's Film Clip Friday installment. (It's only 3.5 minutes long. I only wish that's how long the ceremony tonight will be! Ha Ha.)
Jim's the guy with the big, relieved smile as he receives his diploma and gives the peace sign at the end as the class is leaving. :)
Film clip Friday: "Getting Old" Part 3
Here is Jimmy at age 21. I have to laugh that one answer is identical to Shelby's from last week's clip! :)
This is an especially appropriate film clip, because Today is Jimmy's Birthday!!! HAPPY 31st birthday, my Sun!!! (Ummmm... are you feeling old yet???)
I love you!
Mom
(Here are photos of Jim growing up, if you haven't seen them.)
A New President
I was hoping that someday my son Jimmy would become president. This is his first campaign photo, taken in 1988! :)
Since that hasn't happened yet, I congratulate President Obama, and pray for him and our great nation.
This article says a lot: Bring Change Yourselves, America
Five Hundred Miles (actually, two thousand.)
Well, they are gone. It was such a joy to have them here, but I feel so empty now.
We had a lively song fest for awhile yesterday evening to try out my brand new guitar. First Jimmy played, and then I took my turn. The songs were cheerful, even my little tongue-in-cheek goodbye song to the babies:
“…now it’s time to say goodbye to all our company.
M-I-C (see you real soon!) K-E-Y (why? Because Grandma loves you!) M-O-U-S-E!”
Jimmy left the room to pack up the car for the airport, and I smiled, snuggled my face into Stevie's feather-soft hair, and idly began singing him another old song:
“If you miss the train I’m on, you will know that I am gone, you can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles…”
I caught myself off guard with my choice of song. Right then, it hit me like a ton of bricks that they are leaving and it will be a year before I can see them again. Why does this country have to be so big, anyway?
“Lord I’m one, Lord I’m two, Lord I’m three, Lord I’m four, Lord I’m Five Hundred Miles away from home…”
I couldn’t finish the song. It made me cry.
This is how we create a family band!
Starring Jimmy, John, Andy and Stevie.
Sorry, video quality isn't the greatest, but this is family bonding through music at its very best! :)
The Birthday Bash
The kids' last day in town is tomorrow, so I will be able to get back to writing soon. In the meantime, here is a slideshow of Andy and Stevie's first birthday bash that we had at Cici's Pizza last night. We also celebrated Grandma's 80th birthday along with Tiff's ?? birthday. (I know, but I won't tell on you, Tiff! :) )
They're here! :)
Shelby returned safe and sound from her mission trip today. Other than picking her up, the only thing I have done all day is play with my sweet babies. I'll post again soon! :)
They are on the way! Are we ready????
Jimmy, Tiffanie, and my grand-twins are arriving today! :)
Here is the warning photo that Tiff sent yesterday.
I’m not worried. As long as Jim and Tiff are bringing their cages and extra liners we should be just fine!
Ah well, it should just add to the zoo-like atmosphere we have going around here. I’m talking about the joys of remodeling. This is what the main bathroom looks like right now. Everybody will be using the bathroom attached to our bedroom. Oh joy!
The timing of all this was not my idea, remember? Dang probate, anyway. (grumble.)
Another page from Grandma's Brag book. :)
Here is a typical morning in the life of two babies. I am really starting to dig on this grandma thing. I can enjoy the little sweeties, but the cleanup duty belongs to their parents. Jimmy, Tiffanie and the babies are coming from Maine to visit us in three weeks so I may get to help a bit in that department very soon. However, when I get tired of it I can give them back!
Tiff just sent these photos today. It's nice to get pictures, but it will be so much better when I can hold them, and squeeze them and kiss on them! Naturally they are the cutest twins in the world. (Sorry Arthur and Allen!)
Needless to say, this grandma can't wait 'til they get here.
First we make a BIG mess. :)
Then we get a good bath!
It's good to have a friend who always has your back.
Happy Mother's Day to my Children
A note to my three children:
To my first born......
I've always loved you best because you were my first miracle. You were the genesis of a marriage, the fulfillment of young love, the promise of infinity.
You sustained us through the hamburger years. The first apartment furnished in Early Poverty... our first mode of transportation (1976 feet)... the 7-inch TV set we paid on for 36 months.
You wore new, had unused grandparents and more clothes than a Barbie doll. You were the "original model" for unsure parents trying to work the bugs out. You got the strained lamb, open pins and three-hour naps.
You were the beginning.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

To the middle child...

I've always loved you best because you drew the dumb spot in the family and it made you stronger for it.

You cried less, had more patience, and never in your life did anything "first," but it only made you more special. You are the one I relaxed with and realized a dog could kiss you and you wouldn't get sick. You could cross the street by yourself long before you were old enough to get married, and the world wouldn't come to an end if you went to bed with dirty feet.

You were the continuance.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To the baby...
I've always loved you best because endings generally are sad and you are such a joy. You readily accepted milk stained bibs. The lower bunk. The cracked baseball bat. The baby book, barren but for a recipe for graham pie crust that someone jammed between the pages.
You are the one I held onto so tightly. For, you see, you are the link with the past that gives a reason to tommorow. You darken my hair, quicken my steps, square my shoulders, restore my vision, and give me humor that security and maturity can't give.
When your hairline takes on the shape of Lake Erie and your children tower over you, you will still be "the baby."
You were the culmination.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I shamelessly adapted these words from Erma Bombeck, but they really speak to me. I love you kids. What would Mother's Day be without the three of you???

Love always,
Mom
