A little something to worry about

Why would anybody steal a snow shovel from an elderly couple?

That is what happened to my inlaws over the weekend. The thieves not only knew their victims were elderly, they laughed at them and ran when my mother-in-law rapped on the window.

Unbelievable, and terribly sad.

Their neighborhood becomes less safe as the years pass. Many neighbors have been broken into, the overburdened police department is slow to respond to calls. We would like to see Mom and Dad move, have offered them help to do so, but they refuse. It is their home of 50-plus years. In many ways, we see their point. Why should they be forced to leave because of neighborhood terrorists?

Still, we pray and worry. We don't know what else to do.

Ugh. You know you're not going to get them to leave their home of 50+ years until they "have to."

Is a home security system feasible? Would they be comfortable using it? Able to remember to use it?

UGH. That was one relief of my mom's moving into an over-55 community.... the built-in security of a gated community and the de facto security of being surrounded by retirees who are watching, watching, watching every little thing.

That's pretty pathetic really. It's too bad that many people today have been raised without having consideration for others and others' property instilled in them.

That's really sad, Stella!

The worst part is that the thieves will be back, and bolder.

A home security system is a good thought, although I don't know how well they would be able to disarm it. We also have talked about looking into one of those alert buttons. Not only could they say "I've fallen and I can't get up," they also could say "Send the police!"

There is a Catholic assisted living apartment complex a mile from us. It would be perfect for them, they are devout Catholics and Mass is said daily in the chapel. They could eat in the central dining room or in their own kitchenette. However, they don't want to talk about it. They are both completely mentally sharp, so we can't force them to to move.

It really is pathetic that some people have no boundries within. As Ronni said, the thieves will be back, and that's what worries us.

Thanks for your thoughts, y'all!
