A MythBuster's experiment

The kids saw this experiment on the TV show MythBuster's. One night when they didn't have anything else to do, they decided to try it themselves.

This is what happens when you put Mento's candies into bottles of Diet Coke.

As you can see, it really does work!

Now THAT's science!

Nothing like it seeing it yourself to believe it, eh?

Being a chemical engineer, I figured it had to be a chemical reaction of some sort that created the foam but, apparently, it's not. It's a physical reaction related to nucleate boiling.

Good write up on it on
wikipedia.org

This is one of my kids' most favorite experiments .. also learned from MythBusters.
That show may be the death of me yet.

My kids LOVE to do this!! I just buy the cheap store brand soda and several roll so Mentos and let them have some fun.

I do have to say, that it's best to do it in late fall or early spring so that you don't have bees trying to join in.
